IMPROPER FUEL FILLING & HOW TO AVOID DOING SO

When you visit the gas station in a GM vehicle, you must know how to fill the gas tank correctly to avoid overfilling. Although it might seem intuitive, sometimes you might attempt to fill your gas tank with a few more drops to reach the prepaid amount on the pump. However, if you continue filling the fuel tank after the third click from the nozzle, you have likely overfilled the fuel tank of your GM vehicle and caused gas to enter the vapour vent lines connected to the EVAP canister.

ISSUES THAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF YOU OVERFILL YOUR FUEL TANK

Once fuel makes its way into the EVAP system and its various lines or components, your GM vehicle could experience various issues that sometimes affect drivability. For starters, the fuel tank pressure sensor may detect the excess fuel and cause a check engine light to illuminate for code P0451, which is common for GM models with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder LSY engine. Those newer models have a capless fuel fill, but it functions the same regardless, meaning that you stop filling fuel once the nozzle clicks once.
